Each one of our hand-built 40 rooms is unique, combining distinction and authenticity. Earth buildings blend naturally into the landscape. All the furniture and crafts pay tribute to nature and to talented local artisanship. With no electricity, the rooms are softly lit with a dozen beeswax candles and the starry desert sky.
Siwa possesses a unique natural environment with exceptional geological features, a diversity of flora and fauna, and some 230 natural freshwater springs fed by the Nubian aquifer.
Famed as the location of the Oracle of Amon, whom Alexander the Great consulted before continuing his Persian conquest, Siwa exists today much as it always has, boasting majestic rock formations, lush groves and brilliant salt
lakes throughout the oasis.
Siwa has inspired travellers, scholars and dreamers for centuries.
Through these books, the spirit of the oasis, its history, architecture, people and silent beauty is preserved and shared with the world.
This remarkable photographic book reveals the beauty and mystery of the oasis visited by Alexander the Great. Through splendid images and historical insights, it explores Siwa’s extraordinary constructions made of salt and sand, as well as the traditions and daily life of its people.
Entracte Siwa reflects decades of connection with the oasis and the many people who have shaped its story. Inspired by meaningful encounters with travellers, the people of Siwa and its tribal leaders, the book celebrates the spirit of exchange and understanding that makes the oasis a place of harmony beyond cultural and geographical boundaries.
“Adrère Amellal desert eco lodge is a paradox in process, mingling the asceticism of a Cistercian monastery, the luxuries of a Turkish seraglio, and the whimsy of a Cape Cod sandcastle.”
